Wilmington, NC - Coming off a lopsided win over Milligan College on Friday, The UNCW men’s basketball team continued an impressive start to their season by defeating Eastern Kentucky 78-59 at Raiford G. Trask Coliseum on Monday night. Coach Kevin Keatts was straightforward when he praised Craig Ponder as the leader of the team at the UNCW basketball luncheon at Buffalo Wild Wings back on October 12th. Senior point guard, Craig Ponder, has been living up to his praise this season combining for 50 points in the team’s first two games. Ponder also added 4 assists and 3 rebounds. Senior, Dylan Sherwood, showcased a great performance for the crowd at Trask Coliseum by tying his UNCW career high points total at 16 points and adding 9 rebounds. Junior guard, Denzel Ingram, added 15 points in his first appearance with the Seahawks this season. Ponder, Sherwood, and Ingram performed as a furious trio in the contest.
The Seahawks established an early lead by going up 38-27 at the half. They maintained that lead and finished on top by 19 with the help of a 12-2 run as time expired. The team was energized and motivated by a great amount of support from the crowd made up of UNCW students and the general population of Wilmington. The dynamic offense under Ponder, Sherwood, and Ingram provided the extra spark the Seahawks needed to come through with a victory. The win improved the Seahawks record to 2-0 to start the season.
