Wilmington, NC – Two CAA conference rivals, UNCW and Charleston, came into Sunday Afternoon’s matchup needing a win to somewhat improve their identical 5-10 records. Charleston came out with the win over the Seahawks with a 64-53 score at Raiford G. Trask Coliseum in Wilmington. Charleston did not have it easy, however. UNCW came out to an early lead at 5-0 and kept it close throughout the 1st half. The Seahawks conducted an 11-2 run towards the end of the 1st half and into the beginning of the 2nd half. Senior Point Guard, Shatia Cole, was the leading scorer with 14 points. Cole scored the first basket of the 1st and 2nd halfs. Junior Guard Jasmine Steele scored two of the five 3-pointers scored in the game while Cole made two 3-pointers of her own. Sophomore Guard Madison Raque made the other 3-pointer as part of her 7 point performance. The Seahawks shot 42.6 percent from the field but only was 33.3 percent from the free throw line.

College of Charleston took over the game and started chipping away into the lead UNCW had built up. In the fourth quarter alone, Charleston put together a 19-8 run to run away with it towards the end. Interestingly enough, Charleston was only 2-9 from the 3-point line and only 41.3 percent from the field. However, the team shot 100% from the free throw line.

This loss for the Seahawks dropped their current season record to 5-11 and last place in the CAA conference. This win for the College of Charleston improved their record to 6-10. It improved Charleston’s record against UNCW 3-2 since Charleston joined the CAA conference. The Seahawks still have the edge on the overall record at 9-8. The UNCW Women’s basketball team will next play at William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia Friday, January 22nd at 7 p.m.
