Wilmington, NC - The UNCW men’s soccer team gave their best effort, but it was not enough as the No. 14 ranked, Old Dominion Monarchs, shut them out at home 1-0 Wednesday Evening. The Seahawks participated in their annual Pink Game in support of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The team showed their support by wearing Pink Ribbon shirts in pre-game warm-ups. Items were being sold from tables outside the field, and proceeds from the event will benefit the Pretty in Pink Foundation. This matchup marks the third straight week where the Seahawks played a nationally ranked opponent. This was the revival of a rivalry between the Seahawks and their former Colonial Athletic Association foe. Old Dominion has dominated the UNCW in the past with their all-time matchup record at 21-7-1. This matchup was hard-fought and included many mishaps, failed scoring attempts. This game also featured physical brutality as two of Old Dominion’s players were given the Yellow card in the second half.
The Monarchs defense was stifling and difficult to beat as the Seahawks were held scoreless in a game for the fourth time this season. UNCW attempted twelve goals in the matchup, and the Monarchs provided exceptional defense every time. Despite Old Dominion’s lone goal at the beginning of the second half, the Seahawks exemplified great defense. The notable players who showcased defensive effort included Matt Morgan, Kellen Foster, and Jose Garcia. Sean Melvin allowed only 1 goal out of 8 shot attempts against the Monarchs in the matchup.
Despite the loss, the Seahawks have already secured a CAA playoff berth after Saturday’s, 2-1 win at William & Mary. This loss dropped the Seahawks to 8-4-2 in the conference, and they look to finish the regular season on a high note as they travel to Delaware on Saturday, October 25th. Their final home games will take place October 28th versus Charleston and October 31st versus Florida Gulf Coast. UNCW will finish off the regular season at UNC-Charlotte, on November 3rd. The CAA playoffs are set to begin November 7th.
