WILMINGTON, NC - The UNCW softball team won all 5 their games this weekend by outscoring their opponents by a total of 29-4 and improve their current season record at 7-2. Saturday’s game versus Rhode Island was a complete lopsided victory for UNCW. They dominated the first 3 innings by the score of 3-0. The only flaw was when Rhode Island scored 3 runs in the 4th inning to tie it at 3-3. The Seahawks scored in the 4th to reclaim the lead at 4-3.

The greatest moment of the matchup was when the Seahawks had a 5-run inning in the 5th to make the game at 9-3 and essentially put the game away. Freshman Kali Jones scored a total of 3 runs in the matchup which made her the most effective player of the matchup. The softball team at UNCW featured a lot of pop flies which caused many outs to occur as it was easy for the outfielders to catch. This was less prevalent in the baseball team as they did not hit as many pop flies and hit more straight ahead than straight up, which makes it more difficult to catch out in the outfield.

The softball team at UNCW did not have much of a presence of a spirit group of Seahawks, but rather had a showing of local residents who follow the team closely. There was one older man that consistently cheered the team on and yelling instructions on what to do such as “See the hole in there”, “See it well”, and “That’s it, Hawks!” The softball team at UNCW over the weekend exemplified a team that was hitting on all cylinders which is what Head Coach Kristy Norton similarly said after the matchup versus Rhode Island. When a team does what they are supposed to do and do it all, the team will win. That is what happened over this weekend for the Seahawk softball team.

The Seahawks improved their current record to 7-2 after going 5-0 in the Lafayette Ford Lincoln of Fayetteville Showcase at Boseman Field over the weekend. The Seahawk softball team at UNCW will complete this showcase Wednesday, February 24th at 4pm versus North Carolina A&T.
