WILMINGTON, NC - The UNCW Women’s Soccer took to the field Sunday afternoon for their only fourth game of the regular season and took care of business, handling UMBC 4-1 in a matchup that was undecided until the end.

Accounting for only the second weekend of the 2016 Fall Semester Sports Schedule at UNCW, the Women’s Soccer team had a tie on Friday night with Navy scoring 2 apiece, while the Volleyball team went 2-1 in their tournament over the weekend losing to Davidson Sunday afternoon. As well as the Men’s Soccer team winning away at Campbell Friday night 4-1. The Women’s Soccer team was the last game of the weekend and it didn’t struggle to excite as the result was a 4-1 win, but it was not obvious it would be that type of win until the end.
The Seahawks went into halftime with a cushioned 2-0 lead. UMBC scored its only goal 64 minutes and 13 seconds into the matchup off of a foul kick as there had not been a score in almost 48 minutes as UNCW had scored 13 minutes and 51 seconds into the half and 18 minutes and 27 seconds to account for the 2-0 lead at halftime.

After UMBC’s lone goal of the contest, it appeared to be a tight one. UNCW scored 15 minutes later with a sideways kick right in front of the goal to make it 3-1 with 10 minutes to play. The Seahawks were not done as they put the nails in the coffin on UMBC as it scored its fourth and last goal 1:44 left to play. Freshman forward, Nikki Cox accounted for the first score and the fourth and last score of the matchup. The goalie of UNCW did a fair job fending off UMBC’s few attempts to score, letting in only one attempt as a score.

This matchup was unique in itself because of UNCW’s consistent aggressive attack down the field all game long and challenging UMBC all along the way. Head Coach Paul Cairney was not shy as he enthusiastically yelled across the field to his players about what to do. This game exemplified the team’s ability to be a force to be reckoned with this season.

This matchup improved the Seahawks Women’s Soccer Team at UNCW record to 3-0-1, not posting a loss yet. The team will play away at Campbell on Wednesday, August 31st in Buies Creek, NC then will be back at UNCW Soccer Stadium Sunday, September 4th to play the NC State Wolfpack from Raleigh at 1pm.
